The importance of collagen to our skin
17 Jan 2024

What is collagen?

Collagen is the most abundant protein in our body. It is a key component in the bones, skin, muscles and connective tissues. Collagen helps to provide structure, support and strength in our body.

The importance of collagen for skin

Collagen is found in the dermis (middle layer) of our skin. It helps to provide the strength and elasticity in our skin.

What happens are we age?

Our body produces collagen naturally, but the production decreases as we age. This causes our skin to lose elasticity, giving rise to wrinkles and sagging skin.

What lifestyle habits damage collagen?

Smoking

Smoking reduces the amount of oxygen delivered to the skin tissues, decreasing collagen production.

Exposure to UV light

UV rays from the sun destroys the collagen more rapidly and reduces collagen production.

High sugar diets

Sugar molecules attach to proteins to form advanced glycation end products. These molecules can harm the collagen and elastin fibers in the skin, causing collagen to be weak and brittle.
